Reddit has announced that it is expanding its AI-powered post translation feature. This will allow more Redditors in various regions to access and engage with content from different language communities.
“Earlier this year, we introduced a new machine translation feature to redditors in France, and to continue to bring Reddit to even more people around the world, today we’re starting to roll out machine translation to redditors in more than 35 additional countries”.
Redditors in Brazil and Spain can now click the translate icon in the overflow menu in the top right corner of our apps to translate their entire Reddit feed—including posts and comments—into new language options.
Users of Reddit in Brazil and Spain can now translate posts using a process that is accessible from the post menu options on every update.
Reddit will also be adding translations to more countries in the next weeks, including the Philippines, Germany, Italy, and South America.
Reddit said that this feature is compatible with desktop, mobile browser, and app versions of the platform.
Reddit is inviting users to contribute in their favorite or native language with this functionality. Following that, their content will be automatically translated into the community’s local tongue by the AI-powered system.
Additionally, they are adding signs to translated posts and offering the choice to display the original message. This allows new users to understand the text’s true context in their mother tongue.
It strikes me as one of the most clever uses of AI and machine learning to deliver features that will improve Reddit’s accessibility.
Indicators for translated posts are now available on Reddit, along with the option to see the original language, allowing you to read the entire context as intended.
It’s a clever use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning techniques to increase accessibility; in a similar spirit, YouTube and Meta are developing AI-powered translation tools.
As it continues to add features to the app, Reddit also wants to employ AI to improve its ad tools and summarise conversations on subreddits.
In keeping with platform usage, Reddit appears to be making the correct decisions about AI adaption as it grows, adopting a methodical and thoughtful approach.
